Example Patron Reward
We’ve just added a new tier to our Patreon: the Cervidae. (You may recognize this custom magical creature from our Third Time’s the Charm adventure!)
At this $1 tier, you’ll receive a magical item each month along with updates on the long-form duet campaign book, exclusive patron rewards like region maps special locations, and a discount to Cantrip Candles, among other goodies!
We’ve included this item as an example reward for the magical items on our Patreon. If you’d like to see some of our other magical items, please check out this post!
We also talk about ways to customize magical items based on character type!
Patron Reward, May 2019
Important Note: The playable content we release for patrons (and in this case, you, our lovely blog readers) must be kept exclusive to your personal gaming tables and cannot be distributed, sold, or used in commercial or non-commercial products, downloads, giveaways, contests, websites, etc. However, we would love to talk with you about commissions if you’re interested!
Longsword of Fearful Influence
Weapon (longsword), rare (requires attunement)
Taken from the hand of its former bearer mid-combat, the dark metal blade shines coldly in your hand. The iron absorbs surrounding light; even your eyes seem more intense, frightening, in their reflection back to you.
A +1 longsword that deals an extra 1d8 psychic damage to its targets. Once per day, the sword’s wielder can cast charm person and charm monster, spell save DC 15.
When attuned to the sword (either immediately or over a period of time), it allows its wielder to gain proficiency in either Intimidation or Persuasion, depending on how they most often use the sword’s special magical properties.
Additional Notes
As with any magical items, the details of this magical item are at the DM’s discretion. DMs, if +1 is too intense, perhaps that’s something you allow the character to work up to as they increase in ability and time spent with the sword. We’ve also added in properties so you can use it with or without attunement to help regulate the sword’s power while maintaining flexibility. Perhaps you don’t want it to have spellcasting without attunement and so the player would need to decide if they want to use it simply as a +1 longsword that does psychic damage or attune and have spells and a new proficiency available.
For added flavor, ask the player to think about how the sword does psychic damage and add that to their description of dealing with monsters and people. Does it conjure up images or memories of what the target most fears? Do they begin to hear ghostly whispers at every step?
Our next patron reward is a monthly monster which will start with a new $3 tier once we meet that funding goal! We’re also working on creating more videos and hopefully a one-on-one play advice podcast as well!
